ROI calculator

Free ROI calculator with instant, accurate results. Enter your cost and final value to get net profit, total return on investment, and annualized ROI (CAGR), privately.

Pro is coming soon— unlimited batches, larger files and an ad-free experience. Everything here stays free.

How to use

  1. Enter your initial investment. Type the total amount you put in, including any fees or costs you want counted, and choose your currency from the selector so every result is shown in the units you want.
  2. Enter the final value. Type what the investment is now worth or the total amount it returned to you. This can be higher or lower than your cost; a lower value simply produces a negative ROI.
  3. Add an optional holding period. Enter how many years you held the investment to unlock the annualized return (CAGR). Leave it blank if you only need the total ROI.
  4. Read your results. View your net profit, total ROI as a percentage, and, when a period is given, the annualized ROI so you can compare investments of different lengths fairly.

Features

  • Instant, private results. Numbers are calculated locally in your browser the moment you change an input. Nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is required.
  • Total and annualized ROI. See both the simple total return and the annualized return (CAGR), so a one-month flip and a five-year hold can be compared on the same yearly basis.
  • Handles gains and losses. Enter a final value below your cost and the calculator returns a negative ROI and net loss, giving you an honest picture, not just the upside.
  • Clear net profit figure. Alongside the percentages, you get the plain currency profit or loss so you can see the actual money gained or lost at a glance.
  • Universal currency selector. The math is currency-agnostic and a currency selector formats every figure in the units you choose, from dollars to euros to anything else.

When to use it

  • Checking whether a stock, fund, or crypto position made or lost money after selling.
  • Comparing two investments of different sizes by percentage return rather than raw dollars.
  • Judging a multi-year holding fairly by converting its total return into an annualized rate.
  • Estimating the return on a property, side project, or business outlay after costs.
  • Sanity-checking a marketing spend or one-off purchase by comparing money in versus money back.

Is it private?

The values you enter are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ROI calculator free?

Yes, it is completely free with no limits and no sign-up. You can run as many calculations as you like.

Is my data private? Does anything get uploaded?

Everything is calculated locally in your browser. The figures you enter are never sent to a server or uploaded anywhere, so your inputs stay on your device.

How is ROI calculated?

Total ROI is net profit divided by your initial investment, shown as a percentage: (final value minus initial investment) / initial investment x 100. For example, turning $1,000 into $1,250 is a $250 profit, or a 25% ROI.

What is annualized ROI (CAGR) and how is it worked out?

Annualized ROI, or compound annual growth rate, is the steady yearly rate that would grow your initial investment to its final value over the holding period. It is calculated as (final value / initial investment) raised to the power of (1 / years), minus 1. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time on an equal, per-year basis.

Why does total ROI differ from annualized ROI?

Total ROI is the full percentage gain over the entire period, while annualized ROI spreads that gain across each year and accounts for compounding. A 50% total return over five years is only about 8.4% per year, which is why a long hold can look less impressive once annualized.

Does it account for taxes, fees, or inflation?

No. The calculator shows your nominal return based on the cost and final value you enter. To factor in fees, include them in your initial investment; to approximate a real, after-cost return, adjust the values you type in yourself.
