Credit card payoff calculator
Free credit card payoff calculator. See how many months to clear your balance and the total interest you'll pay, or the payment needed to be debt-free by a date.
How to use
- Enter your balance and APR. Type in your current card balance and the purchase APR shown on your statement, and pick your currency.
- Choose how to plan. Select a mode: enter a fixed monthly payment to find your payoff time, or enter a target number of months to find the required payment.
- Read your results. See either the months to debt-free and total interest, or the monthly payment needed and the interest it costs.
- Adjust and compare. Nudge the payment or deadline up and down to see how a little extra each month cuts months and interest off your plan.
Features
- Two ways to plan. Work from a payment you can afford, or from a deadline you want to hit - the calculator solves for whichever one you leave blank.
- See the true cost of interest. Every result breaks out the total interest you'll pay, so you can see how much a high APR or slow payoff really costs.
- Instant what-if scenarios. Results update as you change the numbers, making it easy to test "what if I paid 50 more?" in seconds.
- Works in your currency. A built-in currency selector formats balances and interest the way you expect, wherever you are.
- Completely private. All math happens locally in your browser - your balance and APR are never uploaded or stored on a server.
When to use it
- Find out how many months it takes to clear your card if you keep paying the same amount every month.
- Set a goal to be debt-free in 12 or 24 months and see the monthly payment that gets you there.
- Compare paying the minimum versus paying extra to see how much interest the extra payment saves.
- Decide whether a balance-transfer or lower-APR card is worth it by comparing total interest at each rate.
- Budget realistically before a big purchase by checking what the repayment would cost over time.
Is it private?
All calculations run locally in your browser - your balance, APR, and payment details are never sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Is this calculator free and private?
Yes. It's completely free with no sign-up, and every calculation runs locally in your browser. Your balance, APR, and payment details are never sent to a server or saved anywhere.
How is the payoff calculated, and is this financial advice?
It uses the standard amortization formula with monthly compounding: your APR is divided by 12 to get a monthly rate, interest is added to the balance each month, and your payment is subtracted. The result is an estimate for education only - not financial, tax, or debt advice. Your card issuer's exact figures may differ.
What's the difference between the two modes?
In the fixed-payment mode you enter how much you'll pay each month and the calculator tells you how many months it takes and the total interest. In the target-months mode you enter a deadline and it tells you the monthly payment required to clear the balance in that time.
Why does my balance never get paid off in the results?
If your monthly payment is less than or equal to the interest charged that month, the balance never shrinks, so there's no payoff date. Increase the payment above the monthly interest (your balance times the APR divided by 12) and the card will start to pay down.
Does it account for new purchases or fees?
No. It assumes a fixed starting balance with no new spending, and it doesn't include annual fees, late fees, or promotional rates. For an accurate plan, stop adding new charges and use the APR and balance from your latest statement.
Where do I find my APR?
Your purchase APR is listed on your monthly statement and in your card agreement, usually as an annual percentage. Enter that yearly figure - the calculator converts it to a monthly rate for you.
